What is the Learning Lab?

The Learning Lab (under the Empowered Communities Workforce Development program) aims to support multidisciplinary training for practicing students and professionals, with special attention to marginalized communities within Northern Virginia. Mason’s Learning Laboratory for Community Health responds to the (HRSA-22-135) HRSA Professions Education and Workforce Development to improve education and training of healthcare professional’s directive.

Through the Learning Lab, students gain experience implementing evidenced-based projects within the community, thus contributing to local efforts to improve health. This aligns with HRSA’s mission to improve health outcomes and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative, high-value programs. The Laboratory employs graduate research assistants to develop case studies with a goal of enhancing their graduate studies and preparing them for the next steps in their career.

Who is involved in Learning Lab?

The Learning Lab is composed of academic and community partners who work with our Graduate Research assistants in order to assess current state community needs, identify areas of opportunity, and conduct detailed current state analyses on prioritized community needs. GRAs receive mentorship through Mason Faculty members and other academic partners in order to guide them through the case-writing process to outline how public health issues are impacting marginalized communities in the Northern Virginia community. The Learning Laboratory is interprofessional in nature and has stakeholders from various backgrounds that participates in the program from across the university.

How does Learning Lab Connect?

By driving engagement by leveraging the pillars of both community and education, the Learning Lab is highly integrated into the Northern Virginia community. Graduate Research Assistants partner with stakeholders within the Northern Virginia Community in order to assess what real-life barriers exist and continue to partner with them in order to propose solutions that may facilitate improved health. Students also gain experience implementing evidenced-based projects within the community, thus contributing to local efforts to improve health. This aligns with HRSA’s mission to improve health outcomes and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative, high-value programs.
